Generally we associate rings with special occasions and gifts. Whether it’s for weddings, anniversaries, or winning a sports championship, we offer rings as a means of celebration. Popular Culture on the other hand has discovered ways to use rings that will punch, kick, and even kill for your attention.

You probably never thought that band around your ring finger contained magical powers capable of controlling the physical world. Well, unfortunately it doesn’t, so stop pointing the damn thing at your cat in hopes it will stop clawing at the sofa. However, this is the premise behind the DC Comic superhero: The Green Lantern. Kyle Rayner and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps are able to fly, shoot destructive beams and even become invisible with their rings. Unfortunately, the Green Lantern Corps are too honorable to battle cats.

18k Gold Rings can save the Earth (Erm, Middle Earth that is)

In a war between elves, orcs, and everything else you would likely find hanging around David Bowie, it was The One Ring that would help save Middle Earth in J.R.R Tolkien’s classic The Lord of the Rings. It took Frodo and Sam three books to take the ring across Middle Earth to Mordor where Frodo was reluctant to throw the ring into the depths of Mt. Doom and save the world from uncertain peril. Which was totally understandable–It was 18k Gold! How do you throw away such perfection!?

Not a ring in the physical sense, the horror film The Ring nonetheless made you think twice about watching random VHS tapes that were located at the scene of a crime. The premise of this Japanese classic that made its way to the States centered on a haunted videotape that when watched would kill the viewer within seven days. There are rings in the footage. There is also a little girl that seven days later crawls through your television and kills you. Yeah, now would be a good time to switch to a DVD player.
