Ring Sizing and Engraving

Most couples these days want their wedding bands engraved. Engraving adds an extra level of personalization to your wedding rings. However, many couples don’t realize when shopping on-line, the ring they are buying may not be exactly the same size as the ring they had tried on at the jewelry store. This is especially true for tungsten rings.

Many people think ring sizes are made the same no matter where you buy it from. While manufacturers try to make their ring sizes by following standard diameters, ultimately there are always slight variances. Is this a sign of bad quality or craftsmanship? No, not really. Think about other products that we buy that have sizes, like shoes and clothing. There are standards for sizes of those items also, but we all know that different shoes from different brands can say the same size, but when you try them on, you feel slight differences in size. The same goes for shirts or pants. This is important to keep in mind because if you want to engrave your ring and you think you are sure of your size, it is still best to always try it on first before getting it engraved if you have the time.

Rings made of tungsten carbide, commonly called just tungsten, have a greater tendency to be different in size when compared to what you were sized at by your local jeweler. Tungsten carbide rings also vary in size due to the same reason that was explained above. However, there is an additional factor that increases the chance a tungsten ring will fit looser than expected. Tungsten rings are comfort fit. Comfort fit means the rings are rounded on the inside instead of being flat. This is so they can slide on and off your finger more easily, hence the name “comfort fit”. Because the inside of the ring is rounded, this makes them fit looser. Most jewelry stores have standard fit finger sizers because they sell gold and platinum rings which are not made comfort fit. This is why it is a good idea to try on a tungsten ring that you order online before having it engraved, especially when many retailers will not take back rings that have been engraved.

In case you are running out of time before your wedding date and don’t have the luxury of sending it back and forth to try on first and then get it engraved or you just want to take a gamble, there are some things you can do to minimize your risk. Always check with a jewelry store if you are able to engrave the ring and exchange it in case the size doesn’t work out or if you just don’t like the style. This way you are not stuck with a ring that doesn’t fit for the rest of your life. Many jewelers offer a lifetime warranty on the rings they sell. It is also a good idea to check and make sure your engraving will not void the lifetime warranty.
